< Go Back 5 Signs of Poor Window Installation Posted: Sep 1, 2019 There is nothing worse than realising that your windows haven't been installed properly. As well as causing problems, it can cost you valuable money and time. Luckily, there are a few signs that you can look out for. Our blog at Kimberlite Glass (York) Ltd focuses on the top 5 signs that you should look out for when it comes to poor window installation.
1. Water Damage In short, water should never be able to gain access through a window. If you notice bubbling wallpaper, pooling water, or mould, you may need to investigate how the window has been installed. Without the right fitting, you could end up with rotting and damaged walls.
The same goes for any drafts that you feel. Just like water, air shouldn't easily enter through a window. If it does, chances are the window has been poorly installed. As well as being a sign of poor insulation, drafts can cause you increased energy bills.
2. Won't Close Properly After being installed, a window should work perfectly. However, if it isn't shutting correctly, then this is a sign that the space has been measured incorrectly. It is worth contacting a professional to inspect this and make any changes necessary.
3. Unwanted Gaps If you notice any gaps between the frame and the sill, do not ignore them. A window should fit flush with the surrounding wall and if it doesn't then it can cause leaks, drafts and more.
4. Window Pane Fog Condensation is a common problem and it can also be a sign that the seal is failing. When a window is poorly installed, it can be easy for moisture to make its way in.
Spotting any of these signs means that you need to seek assistance as soon as you can. Make sure you contact a fully approved and reliable installer and they will be able to assist you.
5. Uneven Caulking This is the material used by installers to seal a window, making it resistant against the weather. Not all the window should be caulked, with the bottom left clear to allow water to drain away.
Noticing poor caulking should ring alarm bells. It is worth checking over the quality of the installation to make sure that nothing else has been done incorrectly or missed.
